Accelerated Reader Points

Accelerated Reading: What is it??

The Accelerated Reader Program allows students to select books of their choice for independent reading.  The children check out books from our library, read them, take notes, and complete a comprehension quiz on the computer.  Part of their homework assignment each week includes reading for a minimum of fifteen minutes per day at least five times per week.  They are also required to keep a log of their minutes which you check each night.

Our Language Arts class will go to the library 2-3 times a marking period to check out books.  Students are allowed to go daily during homeroom if they get a pass the day before.

The goal is to increase your child's fluency and love of reading.  Encourage them to select interesting books equivalent to their reading ability and style.  I recommend reading 3 to 6 point books from our library.  A child who can complete a book and test each week will achieve their point goals and earn a 100% on a test grade each semester.

The total number of points that a student earns is equivalent  to a test grade at the end of the marking period!

****Homework Tips*****

Set up a study area free of distraction.  This means the TV is OFF while completing homework or studying!  Your study area should be well lit and have all the necessary supplies you need.  Check this webpage for the current homework schedule and send any questions to my e-mail at stardp@hamiltonschools.org.

AGREE with you child that it is his or her responsibility to remember to bring homework and books home!  It is his or her responsibility to complete their work and study!

Encourage your child to do homework during the same time each day and in the same place.

Give your child LOTS and LOTS of praise.  They work very hard each and every day in school!

Your child is now in middle school, please encourage them to work independently.  Children practice what they learn in class through homework. The skills they develop will  help them to grow to be independent, motivated and successful adults.  However, it is OKAY to quiz them and help if they are struggling.

Homework should not be a stressful time and can be a way for families to connect!

This will be a terrific year!  Please call me with any questions and I'll be happy to help you anyway I can!   Middle School sure has changed since I was a kid, if you have any curriculum questions call me and I'll explain!  Mrs. Stard

THANK YOU FOR VISITING!
